TEXT

THE MAN FROM THE STONE AGE

It was presented as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the century. The body of a man, believed to be 5.000 years old, perfectly preserved under sheets of glacial ice until it was discovered by hikers a year ago.

The discovery of the iceman, high on the Italian-Austrian border, created great excitement in the scientific world. The find cast a new light on late neolithic civilisation in Europe. Everything from the man’s blue eyes and black, weavy hair to his finely cut leather clothes came under feverish examination. A bow and arrows found nearby led some to believe he was a hunter. Others thought he was a holy man who had been in the mountains communing with spirits when he was caught in a blizzard and froze to death.

But now a German television team have upset the experts by saying that the find could be an elaborate hoax. "It is irrefutable that he is about 5.000 years old", said Dr. Michael Heim, "but we are not convinced that this man died up there in the ice".

Dr. Heim and his team want to know why the cell membranes of the man’s eyes were undamaged. Normally they would not survive more than a year in extreme cold.

TEXT

AMERICAN IMPERIALISM

Global leadership is both the price America pays and the benefit Americans derive from our wealth, our size and our strength. Worldwide hunger and poverty, the spread of nuclear weapons and the proliferation of violent conflicts harm us all. Economic development, better education, better control of arms, cooperation among nations and the peaceful resolution of conflicts help Americans enjoy greater prosperity and peace. Positive and active engagement in world affairs is the smart as well as the right thing for the United State to do. Yet among developed nations, America has become the least generous provider of either development aid or troops for peacemaking. Our virtue is fading.

A few of the early patriots might have expressed isolationist views, but many of them were vigorous internationalists. Benjamin Franklin said, "Our cause is the cause of all mankind." Thomas Paine, the fervently religious man who gave us the name United States of America, said, "My country is the world." Today that spirit is not just noble; it is imperative.

TEXT

THE EVILS OF MONEY

In fact, when I consider any social system that prevails in the modern world, I cannot see it as anything but a conspiracy of the rich to advance their own interest under the pretext of organizing society, They invent all sorts of tricks1, first for keeping safe their wealth, and then for exploiting the poor by buying their labour as cheaply as possible. Once the rich have decided that these tricks shall be officially recognized by society, they acquire the force of law. Thus a minority wants to monopolize what would have been enough to supply the needs of the whole population.

And yet how much happier even these people would be in Utopia2! There, with the simultaneous abolition of money and the passion for money, how many other social problems have been solved! For obviously the end of money means the end of all those types of criminal behaviour, which daily punishments are powerless to check: fraud, theft, rebellion, murder, and treason. And the moment money goes, you can also say good-bye to fear, anxiety, overwork, and sleepless nights. Even poverty itself, the one problem that has always needed money for its solution, would disappear if money ceased to exist.
